The country’s highest court has announced a landmark verdict in the political history of Bangladesh. The Appellate Division has ordered the reinstatement of the caretaker government system, rejecting the verdict to nullify the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution.
Today, Thursday (November 20, 2025), a full seven-judge appellate bench led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed announced this historic verdict.
Main theme of the verdict: The Appellate Division has clarified in the verdict that the caretaker government system during the elections is constitutional and legal. However, the court has given instructions regarding its implementation in light of reality:
The Thirteenth National Parliament Election: Will be held under the current interim government.
The Fourteenth National Parliament Election and subsequent: The caretaker government system will be implemented constitutionally from then on.
