The German Embassy in Dhaka has expressed deep condolences on the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), three-time former Prime Minister and the first female head of government of Bangladesh.
In a condolence message, the German Embassy said that Begum Khaleda Zia played an important role in shaping the political context of Bangladesh during her long political career. Her contribution as a former Prime Minister and former First Lady will be remembered in national life.
The condolence message also mentioned that Begum Khaleda Zia had close diplomatic ties with Germany in the past few decades. Begum Zia met with the then German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer during his visit to Dhaka in 2004. Begum Khaleda Zia also met with him during the state visit of German President Christian Wulff in 2011. She also met with high-level representatives of Germany at various times.
In this moment of mourning, Germany has expressed its deepest condolences to Begum Khaleda Zia’s family, BNP and the people of Bangladesh, honoring her contribution to national life.
The condolence message concluded by saying that Germany is committed to maintaining the long-standing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Germany. The German Embassy prayed for the peace of Begum Khaleda Zia’s soul.
