Desk Report:

Food, Fisheries and Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid said that by implementing the promises made to the people before the elections, the government has proven that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party is not just doing politics of words, but has started working to fulfill the expectations of the people through real work.

The minister said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the re-excavation work of the Dakatia River branch canal in Dosharichon Mouza of Lalmai Upazila and a program organized at the field adjacent to the canal on Monday (March 16, 2026).

The Agriculture Minister said that before the elections, BNP had announced the distribution of family cards to help poor and helpless women, and the implementation of that program started very soon after the elections. Similarly, preparations for launching the Krishak Card with the help of farmers have also been almost completed and he expressed the hope that it will be launched around Poyala Boishakh.

The Minister said that about 70 percent of the country’s people are directly or indirectly involved in agriculture. If the economic capacity of farmers increases, the overall economy of the country will be strengthened. To this end, the government has already taken various supportive initiatives, including agricultural loan waiver.

The minister further said that if BNP comes to power, it was promised to restart the canal digging program like during the time of martyred President Ziaur Rahman. As part of that promise, canal re-digging and renovation activities have started in different areas of the country. Through re-digging of canals, irrigation facilities will be increased, waterlogging will be reduced and the possibility of fish production will increase. In addition, initiatives have been taken to implement these activities on a voluntary basis by involving the local people.

The agriculture minister said that the government’s goal is to further strengthen the country’s agricultural sector and put the rural economy on a sustainable basis by adopting farmer-friendly policies. He called on the local people to play an active role in protecting and managing canals and said that if the canals are functional, agricultural production will increase, water drainage will be easier and the overall development of the area will accelerate.

Comilla-10 MP Md. Mobasher Alam Bhuiyan and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) Chairman Md. Azizul Islam were present as special guests at the event. Deputy Commissioner Md. Reza Hasan presided over the event. Senior officials of various government departments, leaders of local BNP and its affiliates, representatives of civil society and the public were present at the event.

It is worth noting that as part of the ‘Dredging and Re-Dredging of Rivers, Canals and Reservoirs Across the Country’ program as per the Prime Minister’s election manifesto, the canal digging activity under the ‘B-Strong’ project under BADC has started today in Lalmai Upazila of Comilla district. Through this canal digging activity, waterlogging in 42 villages of Lalmai Upazila will be eliminated. As a result, a large number of people in this region will benefit.
