Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) elected as Speaker of the 13th National Parliament, Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal

Member of Parliament from Bhola-3 constituency Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) has been unanimously elected as Speaker of the 13th National Parliament. At the same time, Member of Parliament from Netrokona-1 constituency Barrister Kaiser Kamal has been elected as Deputy Speaker.

The election was held in the first session of the National Parliament on Thursday (March 12, 2026). Earlier, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was serving as Minister for Liberation War Affairs and Barrister Kaiser Kamal was serving as State Minister for Land.

The session was presided over by senior government member of parliament Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain. He said that only one nomination paper has been submitted for the post of Speaker. The nomination was in the name of BNP Standing Committee member and MP Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. The president also said that he had agreed to perform this duty.

Then, MP Nurul Islam was called upon to move the motion. When Nurul Islam moved the motion, MP Rakibul Islam seconded it. As the vote on the motion was ‘yes’, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was elected as the Speaker.

It was also informed in the session that only one nomination paper had been submitted for the post of Deputy Speaker. It was in the name of MP Barrister Kaiser Kamal from Netrokona-1 constituency. He also agreed to perform this duty.

Later, MP Ruhul Quddus Talukder of the government party and whip was called upon to move the motion. When he moved the motion, another whip, ABM Ashraf Uddin Nijan, supported it. As the ‘yes’ vote won, Barrister Kaiser Kamal was elected as Deputy Speaker.
