BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman said that if long-term support is ensured focusing on women and families, the country’s economy will stand on a solid foundation. To this end, he presented a plan called ‘Family Card’.

At a meeting with journalists at Hotel Sheraton in Banani in the capital on Saturday (January 10, 2026), he said that there are about 40 million families in the country on average. Through the Family Card, a family will not be provided with lifelong support, but rather support for 5 to 7 years – either in the form of cash or essential food items.

Tarique Rahman said, ‘We have done research and found that if a woman is given this support, she mainly spends it in three sectors – family health, children’s education and small investments. As a result, the village economy gradually strengthens, and the economic base at the upazila and district levels is strengthened.’

In response to a question about women’s safety, he said, ‘Not only women—all women and men need safety.’ Regarding the large number of people losing their lives in road accidents every year, he said, politicians should think deeply about why this is happening.

Journalist Rezaul Karim Rony, Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman, The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, Jugantor Editor Abdul Hai Sikder, Kaler Kantho Editor Hasan Hafiz, bdnews24.com Editor-in-Chief Toufiq Imroz Khalidi, and editors of various media outlets spoke at the meeting.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Standing Committee members, and senior party leaders were present at the event.
