Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan has expressed the opinion that there is a great opportunity for Bangladesh and Canada to work together to promote sustainable development of the Chittagong Hill Tracts region, address climate change risks and promote eco-tourism.
The minister said this during a meeting with a 4-member delegation led by Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh at the minister’s office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (April 21, 2026).
During the meeting, Hill Tracts Minister Dipen Dewan said, “In the Chittagong Hill Tracts, we are people of all ethnic groups living on the basis of mutual harmony and equality. The current government is working relentlessly to provide all kinds of citizen services to the remote areas of this region.”
The minister praised the long-standing cooperation of the Canadian government in the development of the Hill Tracts and said that Canada has always stood by Bangladesh as a true friend. We hope that Canada will extend its support further in the future.
Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh highly appreciated the socio-economic development of Bangladesh and assured Canada’s continued support for the development of the hilly region.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Md. Monirul Islam, Joint Secretary Mohammad Mominur Rahman, Joint Secretary Kazi Tofail Hossain and senior officials including Political Counselor Marcus Davis of the Canadian High Commission, First Secretary (Development) Joseph McIntosh and Development Advisor Farzana Sultana were present at the time.
