BGMEA President adopts multi-faceted plan to build the future of the garment sector

An important meeting was held at the initiative of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to determine the current situation, challenges and future steps of the country’s ready-made garment sector. The meeting, organized at the BGMEA building in the capital, was presided over by BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu.

The meeting, moderated by Director Faisal Samad, was attended by the chairmen of various standing committees of BGMEA. The meeting was lively and participatory, where the speakers highlighted the responsibilities of their respective committees as well as expressed their opinions on the existing challenges, prospects and necessary steps of the country’s garment industry.

At the meeting, President Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu answered various questions of the members present and highlighted the ongoing activities and future plans of the board under his leadership.

Notable Aspects of the President’s Speech:

The President’s speech at the meeting highlighted several important initiatives and plans. These include—

  • Taking effective initiatives to quickly resolve non-bond related complications
  • Continuing series of bilateral meetings with the concerned ministries to resolve the FOC issue
  • Ensuring effective implementation of existing policies to resolve banking issues of closed and ailing factories
  • Improving incentive management—disposing of files submitted by February-March before Eid and ensuring prompt provision of incentives on a monthly basis in future
  • Maintaining regular communication with the higher levels of the government regarding extension of LDC graduation deadline
  • Strengthening coordination with SME Foundation and policymakers for the development of the SME sector
  • Allocating a coordinated room for inter-committee meetings in the BGMEA building to further accelerate the activities of the Standing Committee
  • Taking forward plans to establish SME Eco-Park
  • Coordinating with the City Corporation to resolve issues related to trade license and holding tax
  • Increasing assistance in setting up solar panels, especially taking Bangladesh Bank’s assistance to ensure bank guarantees for SME entrepreneurs
  • Prioritizing digital compliance—Digital Product Passport (DPP), skill development training and software-based compliance system development
  • Creation of a digital PR platform to showcase the country’s garment industry domestically and internationally

The President further said that in the future, regular monthly meetings will be organized on a small scale with each standing committee, so that the activities are more dynamic and fruitful.

The 1st Vice Chairman, Senior Vice President, Vice President and other directors of BGMEA were present in the meeting. At the beginning of the meeting, special prayers and prayers were offered in memory of the families affected by the Rana Plaza collapse.

This meeting is being seen as an important step in the sustainable development of the country’s ready-made garment sector and effective policymaking.
