Legal basis for July Charter—NCP demands clarity on fundamental reforms

The interim government has provided a legal basis for the implementation of the July National Charter, but the people’s expectations have not been met in this process, the National Citizens Party (NCP) has said. Top NCP leaders made these comments at a formal reaction meeting held at the party’s temporary office on Friday (November 14) evening.

The leaders said that the government has tried to appease the political parties by issuing the charter implementation order. But in reality, the path for fundamental reforms has not been paved. According to them, this order has failed to ensure the necessary accountability to the people.

NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari said, “The political parties signed the July Charter and there was also a note of dissent. We have said from the beginning that a legal basis is needed to implement the charter. The government has now provided a legal basis, which is positive; but the government’s place of responsibility is missing.”

He alleged that although there was hope of changing the fascist structure of 1972, the order issued is again reflecting the same trend.

NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said at the press conference, “Many issues remain unclear in the order issued to implement the July Charter. As a result, doubts remain as to whether the charter will be fully implemented or not.”

Top NCP leaders were present at the event. They said that for the political stability and democratic reconstruction of the country, there is no alternative to implementing the July Charter in a clear, strong and accountable framework.
