Japanese Prime Minister and Foreign Minister condole the death of Begum Khaleda Zia

The Japanese government has expressed deep shock and condolences on the death of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

When Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on Tuesday (December 30, 2025), Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae sent a formal message of condolence to Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh.

In addition, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi sent a separate message of condolence to Mr. Md. Towhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh.

In the condolence message, the Japanese government expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and paid tribute to Begum Khaleda Zia. The message said that Begum Khaleda Zia’s contribution to the democratic progress and governance of Bangladesh will be remembered.

The Japanese Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in their condolence messages specifically mentioned that Begum Khaleda Zia’s leadership and initiative played an important role in building the foundation of today’s strong Japan-Bangladesh bilateral relations. Her visionary contribution will be considered as a unique example in developing friendly relations between the two countries.

The condolence messages prayed for the peace of Begum Khaleda Zia’s departed soul and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family members as well as the people of Bangladesh.
