Tareque Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has taken charge as the new chairman of the party.
He was given this responsibility in an emergency meeting of the party’s standing committee on Friday (January 9, 2026) night. A press release sent to the media at night stated that the post of party chairman fell vacant due to the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
In this context, a meeting of the National Standing Committee was held in accordance with the BNP constitution. The meeting unanimously officially gave Tarique Rahman the responsibility of the vacant post as the chairman of BNP. Through this, he took charge as the chairman of BNP in accordance with the party constitution.
