Desk Report:

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that one of the main goals of the current government is to ensure the overall development of the country through the development of the private sector. To diversify export trade, other potential sectors like the ready-made garments industry, such as gold and diamond industries, will also be provided with equal facilities as the ready-made garments industry.

The Finance Minister said these things while addressing the 46th meeting of the National Board of Revenue Advisory Committee, jointly organized by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and FBCCI at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Wednesday (April 29, 2026).

The Minister said that although the garment sector in Bangladesh is very successful, other sectors like the gold or diamond industry are lagging behind. From now on, if any potential export sector proposes, they will be given equal facilities as the garment industry. He said, “We will not lock down the sectors for fear of theft; theft will be solved separately, but business opportunities will remain open.”

The minister said that strict measures will be taken against unnecessary expenditure increase and corruption in the ports. He called for informing where businessmen are facing obstacles and promised to resolve them quickly.

He said that the country’s current fragile economy needs time to reform. This time, emphasis is being placed on a big and quality budget to alleviate poverty and increase investment, which will create demand from the common people.

He said that to increase revenue collection, direct contact between taxpayers and officials will be reduced through One Citizen One Card and complete digitization, which will reduce corruption. The cabinet has already passed a digital project in this regard.

Requesting support to business organizations and chambers to increase the tax-GDP ratio, the minister said that he wants the help of businessmen to bring those who are still creating unfair competition from outside the tax net under the tax net. He assured the businessmen that the current government does not believe in a patronage economy, but rather in the ‘democratization of economy’ where all businessmen will get equal opportunities.

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir was present as the special guest at the event and National Board of Revenue Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan FCMA presided over the event.
