Calling for the advancement of the livestock sector, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said that the role of this sector is very important in strengthening the country’s economy. And the government is giving utmost importance to the development of this sector. There is no alternative to this sector to achieve self-sufficiency in food and increase exports abroad.
The State Minister said these things in his speech as the chief guest at a program organized on the occasion of ‘World Veterinary Day-2026’ at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) auditorium in Dhaka on Saturday (April 25, 2026). This year, ‘World Veterinary Day-2026’ is being celebrated with due dignity with the theme ‘Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health’ in front of it.
The State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock said that ensuring food security is one of the most important issues in today’s world. Veterinary professionals play an important role in ensuring safe food for people. He said, with time, people are becoming more aware of food safety. Although the veterinary profession was not given much importance once, people’s interest in this sector has increased greatly. Veterinary education has expanded widely in the country.
He said, animals cannot express their problems. Therefore, treating and keeping them healthy is a very difficult and challenging task. Those working in this sector are very talented and qualified. He further said, martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia took important steps for the development of this sector. The current government is also working with special importance on this sector.
The State Minister said, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science are currently going through a complex and challenging situation. We will find effective solutions to it through mutual discussion and coordination. If we work together, all problems can be solved and everyone will benefit equally.
Highlighting the government’s priorities, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said that the current government has been working relentlessly since taking office. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, maximum efforts are being made for the development of the country and the welfare of the people. The fisheries and livestock sectors are coming under the umbrella of the Farmers’ Card; as a result, farmers in this sector will also get equal benefits like farmers. He called on everyone to play a responsible role from their respective positions in the development of the country and said that Bangladesh will move forward with the collective efforts of everyone.
The meeting held under the chairmanship of Veterinary Association of Bangladesh (VAB) President Professor Dr. Md. Mahbub Alam was chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Md. Delwar Hossain. The Director General of the Livestock Directorate, Krishibid Md. Shahzaman Khan, and the Director of the Directorate Dr. Md. Boyzar Rahman delivered speeches as the guests of honor. The meeting was welcomed by VAB Senior Vice President and Project Director Dr. Md. Abdur Rahim.
The keynote address was delivered by Professor Dr. M. Ariful Islam, Department of Medicine, Bangladesh Agricultural University, where the contemporary challenges, prospects and important role of the veterinary profession in protecting public health were highlighted.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the Department of Livestock, along with veterinarians from different parts of the country, were present at the event.
The State Minister had earlier participated in the colorful rally and inaugural function organized on the occasion of World Veterinary Day.
