Desk Report:
During the dry season, many agricultural lands in the Sylhet region are deprived of additional crop production due to lack of irrigation water. Therefore, the government is giving special importance to increasing agricultural production by ensuring irrigation facilities. Commerce, Industry, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said these things as the chief guest at the foundation stone laying and inauguration ceremony of the “Drilling of about 6 kilometers of Banshikhal from Jangail Surma River to Balaura Zilkar Haor” project in Sylhet Sadar Upazila on Tuesday (March 10, 2026).
The minister said that once the canal is dug, about 6 thousand hectares of agricultural land will come under irrigation facilities. As a result, farmers will get the opportunity to produce additional crops, increase their income and make a significant contribution to increasing the country’s food production.
The minister also said that the government is committed to implementing the election promises made to the people. The government has taken initiatives to implement various developmental programs within just 21 days of assuming office. As part of that, the ‘Family Card’ distribution program has started in different districts of the country.
He said that the development plans that the government presented to the people during the election will be implemented in phases. Through this, the government will work to improve the quality of life of the people of Sylhet and the whole country.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarwar Alam, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khoshnur Rubaiyat and local dignitaries were present at the event.
