World champions Argentina secured their place in the last 16 of the tournament after a hard-fought 3-2 win over Cape Verde. Cape Verde came back from behind twice in the match held in Miami but eventually lost to the African team through an own goal in extra time.
Argentina took the lead early in the match through Lionel Messi’s goal. It was Messi’s seventh goal of the tournament. However, Argentina’s joy did not last long. Cape Verde equalized through Deroy Durat’s goal, which put additional pressure on the world champions.
Then Lisandro Martinez scored to put Argentina ahead again. But Cape Verde did not give up. They tied the match for the second time with a brilliant goal from Sidney Lopez.
The match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes, so the match went into extra time. Cristian Romero’s header from a corner kick in extra time deflected off Dean Burgess and into the net. Argentina won 3-2 with that own goal.
Despite putting up a strong resistance, Cape Verde were eventually eliminated, but the team was praised for their great fight. On the other hand, Argentina secured a place in the last 16 of the tournament with this dramatic victory.
